A BJP Rajya Sabha MP, Dinesh Sharma, is appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a fresh notification on September 5th, 2026, and informed about Sharma appointed to the position effective the day he takes charge. The 62-year-old former deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh will be replacing Admiral D K Joshi (retd.). The post falls into place just before the end of Sharma’s term in the Rajya Sabha on November 25.
Appointment of New Lieutenant Governor – Dinesh Sharma
Dinesh Sharma’s appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory has been made by President Droupadi Murmu.
In the released press statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sharma will take up the new post once he takes over the reins.
In his place, Admiral D K Joshi, who has been serving as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 8th October 2017 onwards, will retire after nearly nine years of service.

Dinesh Sharma is one of the senior leaders of the BJP with substantial experience in state and national politics. Previously, he worked as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh, besides having ties with the BJP organisation.
Dinesh Sharma is a member of the Rajya Sabha and acts as the vice-chairperson of the Upper House. His term in the Upper House ends on November 25, and so this latest development becomes significant in his political career.
Appointment as the Lieutenant Governor makes him occupy the constitutional post of administration of the Union Territory of significant strategic and geographic significance.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are strategically located in the Indian Ocean, near important shipping routes in the region. Moreover, the Union Territory is vital for India from the perspective of national security, connectivity, tourism, and maritime interests.
As Lt Governor, Mr Sharma will have the responsibility of overseeing the functioning of the Union Territory.
