AK Jain appoints as new PNGRB Chairman by Government

The chairman position of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has finally been filled. A K Jain, the former Coal Secretary, has been appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to take on this role for a period of five years. The position has been vacant since December 2020.

The government order announcing the appointment stipulated that he would hold the position until either the age of 65, until further notice, or until the date he assumed charge of the post.

AK Jain appoints as new PNGRB Chairman by Government: Key Points

  • Jain is replacing D K Saraf, the former PNGRB chief who retired on December 3, 2020.
  • Tarun Kapoor, another experienced oil industry official, was also considered for the position but was selected as the advisor to the Prime Minister instead.
  • As the PNGRB chairman, Jain will be responsible for overseeing a range of functions such as granting licenses to entities wishing to operate in the oil and gas sectors, monitoring their activities, and regulating tariffs.

About AK Jain:

AK Jain himself has extensive experience in the energy and environment sectors, having worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and as Joint Secretary and then Additional Secretary in the Niti Aayog handling energy.

Before taking over as Coal Secretary, he also served as Additional Secretary and Special Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
