Assam’s DRIMS: Revolutionizing Disaster Management

Assam has taken a significant step towards enhancing its disaster management capabilities with the launch of the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS). This state-of-the-art digital platform, an initiative of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), aims to streamline the reporting and assessment of damages caused by various disasters, enabling prompt disbursal of aid to those affected.

Accurate Damage Assessment and Aid Disbursal

DRIMS, developed in collaboration with UNICEF, efficiently captures critical impact indicators of damages during disasters. This real-time data collection enables authorities to deliver relief and rehabilitation grants expeditiously to the affected beneficiaries. The platform also tracks damages to crops, livestock, and other assets, facilitating swift post-disaster restoration efforts.

Empowering Communities with Knowledge

During the launch event at the Assam Administrative Staff College (AASC), Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam’s Chief Secretary, Dr. Ravi Kota, released the “Handbook on Financial Assistance during Disasters“. This comprehensive guide aims to empower communities by providing them with a clear understanding of their entitlements during and after disasters, enabling greater access to assistance, particularly for children and women in affected areas.

Enhancing Disaster Preparedness

Recognizing the importance of preparedness, Dr. Kota also inaugurated the State Level Training Programme on Incident Response System for responders, conducted by the National Institute of Disaster Management. This initiative aims to equip disaster response teams with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage and mitigate the impacts of disasters.

Multifaceted Approach to Disaster Management

Assam, being prone to multiple disasters, including floods, has taken a proactive approach to disaster management. Dr. Kota commended the efforts of the ASDMA in disaster mitigation and response, particularly during flood situations. He emphasized the significance of having a centralized online platform that consolidates all disaster-related information, enabling efficient decision-making and coordinated response efforts.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

The development of DRIMS is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the Assam government and UNICEF. By leveraging technology and embracing digital solutions, Assam aims to enhance its disaster management capabilities continually. The platform’s success will pave the way for further innovations and ensure a more resilient and prepared state in the face of natural calamities.

As Assam continues to strengthen its disaster management framework, initiatives like DRIMS and the accompanying training programs will play a crucial role in protecting lives, minimizing losses, and fostering a culture of preparedness among communities.
