Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was one of India’s greatest writers, poets, and thinkers. He played a key role in India’s literary and cultural awakening during the 19th century. Best known as the composer of “Vande Mataram,” India’s National Song, he is often called the Sahitya Samrat (Emperor of Literature) of Bengal.

Early Life and Education

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on June 26, 1838, in Kanthalpara village, located in Naihati, West Bengal. He came from a traditional Bengali Brahmin family. His father, Yadav Chandra Chattopadhyay, was a government official who later became the Deputy Collector of Midnapur.

Bankim studied at Hooghly Collegiate School and later joined Presidency College, Kolkata, where he graduated in Arts in 1859. He was among the first graduates of the University of Calcutta. In 1869, he also earned a law degree, showing his brilliance as both a scholar and an administrator.

Career of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in Administration

After completing his studies, Bankim Chandra joined the British government service as a Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector in 1858. He worked in several districts of Bengal, including Jessore and Arambag. Although he served in the colonial government, he often disagreed with British officials and strongly opposed injustice.

He retired from government service in 1891, after over three decades of dedicated work, and was later honored with the titles Rai Bahadur and Companion of the Indian Empire (CIE) by the British.

Literary Career and Contributions

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee is often regarded as the pioneer of modern Indian fiction. His first published novel was “Rajmohan’s Wife” (in English), but his real fame came from his Bengali novels, starting with “Durgeshnandini” in 1865 — the first Bengali romantic novel.

He went on to write several classic works that explored themes of love, patriotism, social reform, and Indian culture. Some of his most famous novels include:

Vande Mataram – The National Song

One of Bankim Chandra’s greatest contributions to India was the creation of “Vande Mataram,” written in Sanskritised Bengali. The song appears in his novel “Anandamath” (1882), which depicts a group of monks fighting for India’s freedom.

“Vande Mataram” means “I bow to thee, Mother” — a tribute to Mother India. It soon became a patriotic anthem during the freedom movement, inspiring countless freedom fighters. In 1950, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted it as the National Song of India, giving it equal honor with the National Anthem, “Jana Gana Mana.”

Bankim Chandra was not just a novelist — he also wrote essays, poems, religious texts, and philosophical works. His important writings include:

• Bijnan Rahasya – Essays on science and knowledge
• Samya (Equality) (1879) – A reflection on social justice

He also edited and published the magazine Bangadarshan in 1872, which became an important platform for promoting Bengali literature and nationalism.

Influence and Legacy of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was more than a writer — he was a nation-builder through words. His works inspired leaders like Rabindranath Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, and Mahatma Gandhi. Tagore described him as “a man with two strong hands — one that created great literature, and the other that guided young minds.”

Even after his death on April 8, 1894, Bankim’s writings continued to influence India’s cultural and national identity. The Government of West Bengal later established the Bankim Puraskar in his honor, awarded for excellence in Bengali literature.
