Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh Remembered on His 15th Death Anniversary

On the 15th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh, a grand tribute was paid to the visionary leader in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the remembrance ceremony, highlighting Nanaji’s unparalleled contributions to rural development, social reform, and political leadership. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister Shri Rajendra Shukla. Alongside the tribute, the program also included the inauguration of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s statue and a presentation based on the life of Lord Ram, titled “Ram Darshan”.

The Life and Legacy of Nanaji Deshmukh

Born in Maharashtra, Nanaji Deshmukh dedicated his life to nation-building and social welfare. From a young age, he was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and went on to become a key figure in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, serving as its General Secretary. His contribution to Indian politics and rural development earned him immense respect across party lines.

Union Minister Amit Shah described Nanaji as a man whose influence transcends generations, leaving a lasting impact on society. His ability to gain universal acceptance in politics, despite ideological differences, set him apart as a true statesman. His unwavering commitment to Antyodaya (upliftment of the last person in the social hierarchy), a principle pioneered by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, became the foundation of his work.

Nanaji Deshmukh’s Contribution to Rural Development

Nanaji’s greatest legacy lies in his transformative rural development programs. He believed that true progress could only be achieved if villages became self-sustaining and economically independent. To realize this vision, he established several development models, notably in Chitrakoot, where he worked tirelessly to implement the principles of Integral Humanism (Ekatm Manavvaad).

His contributions included:

• Establishing Deendayal Research Institute (DRI) in Chitrakoot, dedicated to rural development.
• Implementing sustainable agricultural practices and empowering farmers and artisans.
• Advocating for education and skill development in villages.
• Setting up healthcare initiatives to improve the well-being of rural populations.

Amit Shah emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government continues to uphold Nanaji’s vision through various rural welfare schemes. Over the past decade, the government has improved the lives of 60 crore underprivileged citizens by providing housing, sanitation, drinking water, LPG connections, electricity, and healthcare.

Nanaji Deshmukh’s Role in Politics and Social Reform

Though deeply involved in politics, Nanaji Deshmukh was known for his ethical approach. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later contributed significantly to the formation of the Janata Party, which opposed the Emergency of 1975-77.

Unlike many politicians, Nanaji chose to retire from politics at the age of 60 to devote himself entirely to nation-building and service. His decision reflected his selflessness and deep-rooted commitment to social welfare.

Honours and Recognition

Recognizing his lifelong dedication to the nation, Nanaji Deshmukh was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. In 2019, he was posthumously honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in acknowledgment of his invaluable contributions to society.

Amit Shah remarked that Nanaji’s legacy surpasses the honors bestowed upon him, as his work continues to inspire generations of leaders and social reformers.

Nanaji’s Influence on Education and Cultural Nationalism

Nanaji was a strong proponent of education rooted in Indian values. He was instrumental in establishing the first Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gorakhpur, a movement that has now expanded to thousands of schools across the country, imparting quality education with a focus on Indian culture and traditions.

His life was deeply inspired by the ideals of the RSS, Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s nationalism, and Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj (village self-governance).

Chitrakoot: The Spiritual and Cultural Significance

The choice of Chitrakoot for Nanaji’s tribute was significant, as the region holds immense spiritual and cultural value. It is believed to be the place where Lord Shri Ram spent a significant portion of his exile. Amit Shah emphasized that Chitrakoot embodies India’s rich heritage and remains a beacon of devotion and selfless service.
