BHEL Achieves Milestone in Curbing NOx Emissions: Indigenous SCR Catalysts Manufactured

In a significant stride towards environmental responsibility, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), a prominent state-owned engineering company, has successfully developed the first set of indigenous Selective Catalyst Reactors (SCR) Catalysts. These catalysts play a crucial role in mitigating nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from thermal power plants. Previously reliant on imports, this achievement underscores the ‘Make in India’ initiative championed by the government.

Advancing ‘Make in India’ Initiative: BHEL’s Breakthrough

Underlining their commitment to self-reliance and national innovation, BHEL has crafted a monumental milestone by producing homegrown SCR Catalysts. The catalysts are integral to tackling NOx emissions, a prevalent pollutant resulting from coal combustion in thermal power plants. This development aligns perfectly with the ‘Make in India’ campaign, boosting indigenous manufacturing and self-sufficiency.

Flagging off the First Batch: Promising Launch

The inaugural batch of domestically manufactured SCR Catalysts has been set in motion for use at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Telangana, which boasts a substantial capacity of 5×800 MW. The flag-off event was presided over by Renuka Gera, Director of Industrial Systems & Products at BHEL. The catalysts are expected to play a pivotal role in curtailing NOx emissions at the power station.

Reshaping the NOx Landscape: From Import to Innovation

Traditionally, SCR Catalysts were imported due to their specialized nature. However, BHEL has altered this landscape by establishing an SCR catalyst manufacturing unit within its Solar Business Division (SBD) in Bengaluru. This strategic move bolsters the nation’s ability to address NOx abatement in thermal power plants, marking a transition from reliance on imports to homegrown innovation.

A Multifaceted Impact: Collaborations and Initiatives

Recognizing the gravity of NOx emissions and their environmental implications, several key players in the power generation sector have embraced BHEL’s technological breakthrough. Entities like Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO), Maharashtra State Power Generation Co Ltd (MAHAGENCO), West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL), and NALCO have shown their commitment by placing orders for SCR catalysts to enhance their thermal power stations’ sustainability.

A Holistic Approach to Environmental Responsibility

BHEL’s dedication to environmental protection is evident not only through its pioneering SCR Catalysts but also in its comprehensive suite of eco-friendly technologies for thermal power plants. These encompass high-efficiency boilers, electrostatic precipitators, Flue Gas Desulphurisation units, and the SCR Catalysts themselves. The company’s pursuit of sustainable solutions underscores its role as a proactive contributor to a greener future.

Innovative Adaptation: Technology Absorption from Market Leaders

BHEL’s strides in SCR Catalyst technology have been bolstered by its engagement with market leaders, such as NANO from the Republic of Korea. This partnership has facilitated the assimilation of advanced technology, enabling BHEL to indigenize and enhance its SCR Catalyst offerings. This collaborative approach underscores the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation and environmental stewardship.
