Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze, Mirabai Chanu Qualifies for Paris Olympics 2024 at IWF World Cup

The IWF World Cup 2024 was held in Phuket, Thailand from March 31 to April 11, 2024. The event was organized by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the world governing body for men’s and women’s weightlifting.

Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze

25-year-old Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi competed in the women’s 55kg category and won a bronze medal. She lifted a total of 196kg, including 83kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk. This was lower than her silver-medal-winning performance of 203kg at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong won the gold medal with a lift of 234kg, while Romania’s Mihaela Cambei took the silver.

Mirabai Chanu Qualifies for Paris Olympics 2024

Despite finishing 12th in the women’s 49kg category, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024. She is the only Indian weightlifter to have secured a spot for the upcoming Olympics.

The IWF World Cup was the final qualifying event for the Paris Olympics. Mirabai Chanu is currently ranked 2nd in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for the 49kg category. The top 10 ranked weightlifters in each weight class will earn a quota place for their country at the Paris Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu’s Illustrious Career

Mirabai Chanu is one of the greatest Indian weightlifters. She has won several medals for the country, including a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, a gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships, and three Commonwealth Games gold medals (2014, 2018, and 2022).

The 32nd Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
