CDS Inaugurates First Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS)

Marking a significant milestone in India’s defence innovation ecosystem, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan inaugurated the inaugural Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS) on 22nd September 2025 at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. The event is a first-of-its-kind initiative to bring together the Indian Armed Forces, academic institutions, and R&D organisations to collaboratively build next-generation, indigenous technologies for national security.

Themed “Vivek va Anusandhan se Vijay” (Victory through Wisdom and Research), T-SATS represents India’s commitment to a whole-of-nation approach in building military capabilities suited for the complexities of modern and future warfare.

Purpose and Vision of T-SATS

Building a Defence-Academia Innovation Bridge

The primary objective of T-SATS is to synergise the efforts of Services and academia in Research & Development (R&D) for defence-specific applications. It aims to,

  • Encourage academic researchers and students to contribute to India’s military needs
  • Facilitate collaborative technology development
  • Accelerate indigenisation of critical defence systems and platforms

General Chauhan highlighted that modern warfare is increasingly shaped by a convergence of kinetic and non-kinetic threats, such as cyber warfare, AI-driven combat systems, and electronic warfare, all of which demand high-tech, adaptable solutions.

Key Features of the Symposium

Participation and Scope

  • Over 62 academic institutions participated, including top-tier institutes like IISc, IITs, IIITs, and several private technology universities.
  • Directors, faculty heads, and students showcased innovative projects designed for military and dual-use applications.

Technology Exhibition

A dedicated Technology Exhibition was inaugurated featuring,

  • 43 innovative academic exhibits, evaluated by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the three Services.
  • Promising technologies will be shortlisted for future R&D collaboration and funding.
  • This exhibition served as a platform to identify scalable defence-use innovations from within India’s own academic corridors.

Institutional Collaborations and MoUs

To formalise partnerships and pave the way for long-term cooperation, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with leading academic and research institutions,

  • IIT Madras
  • Rashtriya Raksha University
  • Manipal Academy of Higher Education
  • Gujarat National Law University
  • MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
  • Ajeenkya DY Patil University
  • Oriental Institute of Science and Technology
  • Nirma University
