CEC Gyanesh Kumar to Chair International IDEA in 2026

In a major milestone for Indian democracy, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar will assume the Chairship of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the year 2026. He will formally take over the position on December 3, 2025, during a Council meeting of member states to be held in Stockholm, Sweden.

What Is International IDEA?

International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1995 with a core mission to strengthen democratic institutions and processes worldwide. Headquartered in Stockholm, the organisation currently has 35 member countries, including India, and notable observers like the United States and Japan.

Its focus areas include,

  • Promoting inclusive and accountable democracies
  • Supporting electoral system reforms
  • Facilitating inter-EMB collaboration (Election Management Bodies)
  • Countering threats like disinformation and voter apathy

India has been a founding member of International IDEA and has consistently played an active role in shaping its policy direction and democratic development agenda.

Significance of India’s Chairship

With nearly a billion voters, India conducts the world’s largest and most complex democratic exercise. Its transparent electoral systems and extensive voter inclusion practices have long been considered global benchmarks.

As Chair, Gyanesh Kumar will,

  • Preside over Council meetings of International IDEA throughout 2026
  • Shape the organisation’s global agenda, bringing India’s democratic experience into focus
  • Promote evidence-based electoral reforms globally
  • Strengthen collaboration among EMBs across member countries

This is not just a ceremonial role but a platform to export India’s electoral innovations and deepen global cooperation on safeguarding democracy in an era of digital disruption and misinformation.

India’s Role in Global Electoral Capacity Building

India’s Election Commission has been actively supporting capacity building and training of election officials globally through its institutional arm, the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM).

Key achievements include,

  • Training over 3,169 officials from 142 countries
  • MoUs with 28 nations for training and cooperation

Under Kumar’s leadership, this collaboration is expected to intensify, enabling more structured knowledge sharing, joint programmes, and technical documentation of India’s electoral best practices.
