Centenary Commemorative Coin Honoring M. Karunanidhi

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 18, released the centenary commemorative coin of Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in Chennai. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister paid rich tributes to the late leader and described him as one of the icons of Indian politics.

About M. Karunanidhi

Muthuvel Karunanidhi was an Indian writer and politician who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades over five terms between 1969 and 2011. He is popularly referred to as Kalaignar (Artist) and Mutthamizh Arignar (Tamil Scholar) for his contributions to Tamil literature.

Longest intermittent tenure as Chief Minister

He had the longest intermittent tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu with 6,863 days in office. He was also a long-standing leader of the Dravidian movement and ten-time president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party.

Contribution of Kalaignar

Kalaignar had played a defining role in realising the importance of federalism in a democracy. Mr. Singh said that it was the DMK patriarch who resonated with the voice of Tamil Nadu in national politics.

‘Titan of Indian politics’

In his address, the Union Minister said, “Karunanidhi is one of the most revered leaders of our country. A man whose influence extended far beyond the borders of Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi was a titan of Indian politics, a cultural stalwart and a relentless advocate of social justice.”

Dravidian champion’s political journey

He described the Dravidian champion’s political journey as a tale of resilience, determination, and a profound connection with the people. His five terms as chief minister were noted for his exceptional ability to address the needs of ordinary citizens. “His participation in national politics, his role in coalition government and his interactions with leaders across the political spectrum reflected his commitment to the idea of India,” he added.
