Defense Research and Development Organization has conducted the successful flight-test of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) and it was performed from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on 15th of June, 2026. This missile successfully met the all the mission objectives and it demonstrates the country’s growing capability in the long-range precision strike systems.
DRDO Conducts Successful Flight-Test of LRLACM
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, which is located off the coast of Odisha.
According to the DRDO, all mission parameters were achieved successfully. The missile’s performance was monitored via the various tracking systems deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur.
What is the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM)?
The Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) is an indigenously developed cruise missile that is designed to strike the strategic land targets with high precision over long distances.
Unlike the ballistic missiles, cruise missiles fly at the lower altitudes and follow the guided flight path which makes them difficult to detect and intercept.
Such missiles are widely used for the precision attacks against enemy infrastructure, military installations, command centres and the strategic assets.
The successful test marks the important step in to strengthening the India’s indigenous long-range strike capability.

Indigenous Development and Industry Participation
The LRLACM has been developed entirely within the country and all the major subsystems have been designed and developed by the various DRDO laboratories in partnership with Indian industries.
The Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru served as the nodal laboratory for this project.
The program demonstrates the increasing role of the Indian industries in the advanced defense manufacturing and aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defense sector.
Importance of Cruise Missiles in Modern Warfare
Cruise missiles have become the crucial component of the modern military strategy due to their accuracy, flexibility and survivability.
These missiles can,
- Strike the targets deep inside in enemy territory.
- Fly at the low altitudes to evade the radar detection.
- Carry conventional or strategic payloads.
- Conducts the precision attacks with minimal collateral damage.
- Enhance the deterrence and operational readiness.
