Foundation Stone Laid for Naval Communication Station in Telangana

On October 15, 2024, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a new Very Low Frequency (VLF) Station of the Indian Navy at Damagundam Reserve Forest, Vikarabad, Telangana. Covering 2,900 acres and costing Rs 3,200 crore, this facility aims to enhance the Navy’s communication capabilities, facilitating secure and reliable long-distance transmission essential for effective command and control in complex maritime environments.

Strategic Importance

Rajnath Singh emphasized that the VLF station will be a strategic asset, vital for real-time communication between naval ships, submarines, and command centers. He stated, “Without real-time communication, we cannot gain an edge despite having adequate equipment or manpower.” This facility is designed to bolster the Indian Navy’s operational readiness amid increasing global interest in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Economic and Environmental Considerations

The construction of the VLF station is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for local communities, with both skilled and unskilled labor required during and after its establishment. Singh assured that environmental concerns are being addressed, ensuring sustainable development practices are in place.

Tribute to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

On the occasion of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary, Rajnath Singh paid tribute to his contributions to India’s defense sector, recognizing his role in inspiring future generations of scientists and engineers.

Future Prospects

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi stated that the new VLF station would complement the existing facility at INS Kattabomman, ensuring a robust communication network vital for naval operations. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s maritime security and operational capabilities.
