After his death, his daughter-in-law, Ahilyabai Holkar, took over the administration of Indore, following the brief reign of his grandson, Male Rao Holkar, who died in 1767. Malhar Rao is remembered as one of the key figures who contributed to the spread of Maratha power across India. His samadhi, or memorial, was built by Ahilyabai at the site of his cremation in Alampur.
