In a major step towards a fully digital tolling ecosystem, the Government of India has proposed to discontinue cash payments at all National Highway toll plazas from April 1, 2026. According to the National Highways Authority of India, all toll payments across the country will now be processed exclusively through digital modes such as FASTag and Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The move aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce congestion, and ensure transparency in toll transactions.
Why Is Cash Being Discontinued at Toll Plazas?
The decision to eliminate cash payments is driven by multiple objectives,
1. Faster Traffic Movement
Digital payments will improve lane throughput, allowing vehicles to pass toll plazas more quickly.
2. Reduced Congestion
Cash transactions often slow down toll processing. A cashless system reduces waiting time and long queues.
3. Greater Transparency
Digital transactions ensure better monitoring, minimize revenue leakages, and improve accountability.
4. Enhanced User Experience
With seamless digital payments, commuters will experience smoother travel across highways.
Digital Modes Allowed from April 1
From April 1, toll payments will only be accepted through,
- FASTag (RFID-based automatic toll deduction system)
- UPI (Unified Payments Interface)
- FASTag is already mandatory for most vehicles, but this move makes it fully compulsory, eliminating the hybrid model of cash and digital lanes.
Impact on National Highways and Expressways
India currently has more than 1,150 fee plazas on National Highways and Expressways. The complete shift to digital tolling is expected to,
- Improve traffic management
- Minimize delays
- Enhance road safety
- Strengthen digital infrastructure in transport
This transition aligns with India’s broader push toward Digital India initiatives and smart mobility solutions.
What Is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. It automatically deducts toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle.
Benefits include,
- No need to stop at toll plazas
- Automatic payment deduction
- SMS alerts for transactions
- Reduced fuel consumption due to less idling
About NHAI and Digital Tolling
- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) operates and manages India’s National Highway network.
- Over the past decade, it has progressively introduced digital tolling mechanisms to increase efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
- The nationwide FASTag rollout began in 2019, and this latest move marks the final step toward complete digitalization of toll collection.
