Good morning to all my fellow students and respected teachers. Today we gather here to remember and celebrate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

On the 2nd of October, 2023, India observes this day as Gandhi Jayanti and pays tribute to our nationalist, Mahatma Gandhi. Born on 2nd October 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, within the British Indian territory. Mahatma Gandhi hailed from a merchant-class family. He completed his early education in India during the British colonial era before journeying to England to study law.

This year marks the 154th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, affectionately known as Bapu, a title given to him by the people and recognized as the Father of our Nation. He was bestowed with the honorific title “Mahatma” by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, signifying the one with the greatest soul. Today, we come together to reflect upon the values that guided his life and his relentless struggle for freedom as we commemorate his 154th birthday.

Gandhiji’s impact transcended national boundaries and his philosophy of non-violence became a powerful global tool for achieving change. In recognition of his contributions, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this day as the International Day of Non-Violence, honoring his legacy and the profound influence he had in offering the world a potent means to combat justice.
