Geological Survey of India Celebrates 174th Foundation Day

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) commemorated its 174th Foundation Day on March 4th, 2024, with zeal and enthusiasm resonating across all its offices nationwide. The event was a grand affair, with celebrations held in Kolkata, the Central Headquarters of GSI, and the Southern Region’s headquarters in Hyderabad.

Inauguration Ceremony in Kolkata

In Kolkata, the festivities kicked off with an inaugural ceremony led by Shri Janardan Prasad, Director General of GSI, who ceremoniously lit the traditional lamp to commence the celebrations. The event saw the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Dr. M. K. Mukhopadhyay, former Director General of GSI, and Dr. Joydeep Guha, Additional Director General & Head of Department, CHQ, along with other distinguished working and retired officials from GSI.

The celebrations began with a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Thomas Oldham, the visionary founder of GSI, and Dr. M. S. Krishnan, the first Indian Head of GSI, through the ceremonial garlanding of their portraits. This gesture symbolized the deep respect and homage paid to their pioneering contributions.

An exhibition showcasing an array of rocks, minerals, and fossils was inaugurated, providing an enriching experience for students from various colleges in Kolkata and its suburbs. Southern Region’s Celebrations in Hyderabad

Meanwhile, at the Southern Region’s headquarters in Hyderabad, festivities unfolded with equal fervor. Students from local schools were invited to explore the captivating rock garden on the campus, immersing themselves in the wonders of geology.

Addressing the gathering, additional director-general Venkateswara Rao congratulated all employees for their dedicated contributions to the GSI’s mission. He reflected on the organization’s rich history and urged the staff to strive for excellence while meeting the Ministry of Mines’ expectations.

Mr. Venkateswara lauded the Southern Region’s accomplishments in meeting targets related to e-HRMS and IGOT within record timeframes. He expressed appreciation for the successful workshops organized by deputy directors general of state units and GSI officials, focusing on the utility of NGCM data, NGDR portal, and emerging technologies, aligning with the Ministry of Mines’ directives.
