Govt defers implementation of restrictions on imports of laptops, PCs and tablets to Nov 1

In a significant late-night decision, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced the postponement of the licensing mandate for the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers in India. The government had earlier imposed import restrictions on these products due to security concerns and to boost domestic manufacturing. However, in light of recent developments, the implementation of the restrictions has been deferred until November 1, 2023.

Import Clearance Extended Until October 31

  • Import consignments of laptops, tablets, and PCs can be cleared without a license until October 31, 2023.
  • Starting November 1, 2023, a valid License for Restricted Imports will be required for the clearance of import consignments.

Transitional Arrangements for Importers

  • Liberal transitional arrangements will be put in place for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and servers until October 31.
  • Importers will have to comply with the new licensing requirements from November 1, 2023.

Government’s Security Concerns and Promotion of Domestic Manufacturing

  • The government imposed import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and certain types of computers on an immediate basis due to security reasons.
  • The move also aims to promote domestic manufacturing of these products and reduce inbound shipments from countries like China and Korea.

Watchful Monitoring Through Import Curbs

  • The implementation of import curbs allows the government to closely monitor the sources and locations of these products’ imports.
  • The measures will aid in strengthening security and ensure greater control over the origin of imported goods.
