The Gujarat High Court has issued the policy which the banning the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for making the judicial decisions or to drafting judgments. As High court has recognized that AI can improve efficiency but it also emphasized that human reasoning must remain at the center of justice to ensuring fairness, accountability and judicial independence. This move comes after the growing the debates on AI’s role in the sensitive sectors like law and governance.
AI Ban in Judgments: What the Gujarat High Court Said
The High Court’s policy clearly restricts the AI from being used in any core judicial function.
According to the guidelines,
- AI cannot be used for the decision-making or adjudication
- It cannot assist in judicial reasoning or interpretation of law
- Use of AI to drafting or generating judgments, orders or rulings is prohibited
- Also AI cannot influence the bail decisions, sentencing or rights determination
Mainly the court has clarified that even reviewing AI-generated judgments is not acceptable and reinforcing that judicial responsibility cannot be delegated.

- Process names, addresses or personal details of individual or parties

- Generate or modify evidence or legal documents
- Categorize or evaluate evidentiary material related to system
Where AI is Allowed: Limited but Useful Role
While restricting AI in core judicial functions the High Court has allowed the use in non-decisional and administrative areas.
AI can be used for,
- The legal research and case law analysis
- Also to identifying precedents and statutory interpretation (with verification)
- In administrative tasks and case management
- Also to drafting circulars, notices and training materials
