ICAI Appoints New President and Vice-President for 2025-26

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced the appointment of CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda as its 73rd President and CA. Prasanna Kumar D as the Vice-President for the term 2025-26. Their leadership tenure begins on February 12, 2025. ICAI, which plays a crucial role in regulating the accounting profession in India, has entrusted them with the responsibility of guiding the institution in maintaining high professional standards.

Who are the new ICAI leaders?

CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda, the newly elected ICAI President, has been an active member of the accounting profession for over three decades. He started his career as a Chartered Accountant in 1991 and has held key roles within ICAI, including serving on the Central Council since 2004. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce from M.L.N. College, where he consistently ranked on the merit list of Kurukshetra University. Throughout his career, he has chaired several important ICAI committees, such as the Internal Audit Standards Board and the Committee on Management Accounting.

CA. Prasanna Kumar D, the newly elected Vice-President, brings extensive experience in the field of accountancy and professional education. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Loyola College, Chennai, and an MA in Sociology from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, he completed his Chartered Accountancy in 1984. As a fellow member of ICAI for over three decades, he has been instrumental in shaping policies and standards, having served three consecutive terms on the Central Council.

How does this leadership transition impact ICAI?

The transition marks the passing of leadership from CA. Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal, who served as the 72nd President in 2024-25. Under his leadership, ICAI worked towards enhancing the role of Chartered Accountants in India’s economic framework. CA. Nanda, who served as Vice-President during Agarwal’s tenure, is expected to continue building upon these initiatives.

With this leadership change, ICAI aims to strengthen its global presence, improve professional education, and enhance regulatory frameworks. As one of the world’s largest accounting bodies, ICAI has a network of over 4 lakh members and 8.5 lakh students, supported by 5 Regional Councils, 175 branches in India, and 50 Overseas Chapters across 47 countries. The new leadership is likely to focus on further integrating Indian accounting standards with global best practices.

What role does ICAI play in India’s financial sector?

Established in 1949 under the Chartered Accountants Act, ICAI functions under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. It plays a critical role in maintaining financial integrity, ensuring professional ethics, and regulating the CA profession in India. Over the years, ICAI has been instrumental in shaping accounting policies, auditing frameworks, and financial reporting standards in the country.

With this new leadership, ICAI is expected to continue focusing on its core objectives—improving governance, promoting transparency in financial reporting, and supporting economic growth through a strong professional community. The newly elected President and Vice-President will be at the forefront of these efforts, ensuring that ICAI remains a key player in India’s financial sector.
