ICC Imposes Five-Year Ban on West Indies Cricketer Devon Thomas for Anti-Corruption Breaches

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken strong action against West Indies player Devon Thomas by imposing a five-year period of ineligibility from all cricket after he admitted to breaching multiple anti-corruption codes.

Breach of Anti-Corruption Codes

Thomas accepted breaching seven counts of the anti-corruption codes of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). These breaches included:

  • Contriving or attempting to fix matches in the Lanka Premier League 2021
  • Failing to disclose approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct during the Lanka Premier League 2021, Abu Dhabi T10 2021, and CPL 2021
  • Obstructing or delaying the investigation into corrupt conduct
  • Failing to disclose the receipt of gifts or benefits that could bring the game into disrepute

Suspended Sentence and Backdated Ban

While the ICC imposed a five-year ban on Thomas, the last 18 months of the period have been suspended. The period of ineligibility has been backdated to May 23, 2023, the date when he was provisionally suspended.

Stern Warning from ICC

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit, emphasized the severity of Thomas’s actions, stating, “Having played both international and professional domestic/franchise cricket, Devon attended numerous anti-corruption education sessions. He therefore knew what his obligations were under the Anti-Corruption Codes but failed to meet these obligations across three different franchise leagues.”

Marshall further added, “This ban is apt and should send a strong message to players and corrupters that attempts to corrupt our sport will be dealt with firmly.”

Cooperation and Admission of Charges

Thomas chose to admit the charges and agreed to a sanction with the ICC, avoiding an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing. The decision to cooperate and accept the charges likely factored into the partially suspended sentence.

Protecting the Integrity of Cricket

The ICC’s decisive action against Devon Thomas underscores its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport. By imposing a significant ban and making the anti-corruption decision public, the governing body aims to deter potential violators and uphold the principles of fair play.

As cricket continues to grow globally, the ICC’s efforts to combat corruption and ensure transparency remain crucial in preserving the game’s reputation and the trust of fans worldwide.
