India and Cyprus have upgraded the bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, as Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides visited the National Capital. This partnership will marks the important development in the India’s relations with the Mediterranean nation and it also signals the growing strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Key Agreements Signed
India and Cyprus has signed the six major agreements and MoUs covering defense, cybersecurity, innovation, education, culture and maritime cooperation.
A major agreement was the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, which will strengthen the security coordination between the two nations.
An agreement was also signed between the India’s Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic Academy of Cyprus for diplomatic training cooperation.
Technology and Cybersecurity Cooperation
Both the nations have signed an MoU in the field of innovation and digital technology to enhance collaboration in research and emerging technologies.
India and Cyprus has also announced the creation of a dedicated Cyber Security Dialogue to improve digital security cooperation.
This reflects the increasing importance of the cyber diplomacy in modern international relations.
Defense and Maritime Cooperation
A Defense Cooperation Roadmap (2026-2031) was also announced to deepen the military collaboration.
The technical arrangement was signed for search and rescue cooperation between Cyprus’s Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Center and India’s Ministry of Defense.
These initiatives will strengthen the maritime security ties between the two nations.
Education and Cultural Relations
India and Cyprus has signed an agreement to expand the higher education and research cooperation.
Another agreement was signed to strengthen cultural cooperation for the period of 2026-2030 and it will promote the people-to-people ties.
Indo-Pacific and Strategic Alignment
Cyprus announced the decision to join the India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) under the trade, connectivity and maritime transport pillar.
This showcases the Cyprus’s growing alignment with the India’s Indo-Pacific strategic vision.
Other Major Announcements
India will also gift the BHISM Cube (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri) to Cyprus as a symbol of friendship and health cooperation.
Both the countries has also announced the celebration of the first India-Cyprus Space Day and it signals the expanding cooperation in the space sector.
Cyprus also announced plans to establish the Cyprus Trade Center in Mumbai to promote bilateral trade and investment.
