India and Vietnam have partnered to develop the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, reflecting their deep maritime connections. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at Hyderabad House in New Delhi marks a significant step in this collaborative effort, which aims to preserve and celebrate the shared maritime heritage of both nations.

The NMHC will feature various aspects highlighting the historical and cultural ties between India and Vietnam. Key elements include:
Artifact Exchange
Both nations will exchange artifacts, replicas, paintings, and archival data related to their maritime histories.
Expertise Sharing
The collaboration will involve sharing expertise in design, technology, and maintenance to create an educational and recreational space utilizing the latest technology.
Project Features and Development
Location and Progress
The Government of Gujarat has allocated 400 acres in Saragwala village for the NMHC, with phase 1A already more than 55% complete. The complex is expected to open to the public next year.
Innovative Components
The complex will include:
- One of the world’s tallest lighthouse museums
- The world’s largest open aquatic gallery
- India’s grandest naval museum
- A Lothal mini recreation of Harappan architecture and lifestyle
- Four theme parks: Memorial, Maritime and Navy, Climate, and Adventure and Amusement
- Fourteen galleries showcasing maritime heritage from Harappan times to the present
- A Coastal States pavilion displaying diverse maritime heritage from India’s states and Union Territories

Cultural Exchange and Tourism
The NMHC will also focus on promoting international tourism centered around maritime heritage and will include a Marine Heritage and Conservation Laboratory.
