India Exports Fortified Rice from Chhattisgarh to PNG

In a significant boost to India’s agri-export and nutrition missions, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the export of 20 metric tonnes (MT) of fortified rice from Chhattisgarh to Papua New Guinea (PNG). This initiative underscores India’s growing capability to deliver high-quality, value-added, and nutrition-focused food products to international markets and aligns with the country’s broader vision of contributing to global food and nutritional security.

What is Fortified Rice?

Fortified rice is created by blending rice flour with vital micronutrients such as,

  • Iron
  • Folic Acid
  • Vitamin B12

These nutrients are infused into rice kernels through an extrusion process, shaped to resemble natural grains. The fortified kernels are then mixed with regular rice in a set ratio, significantly enhancing the nutritional value of the staple. This innovation supports efforts to combat malnutrition, especially in vulnerable populations.

Key Highlights of the Export Initiative

  • Exporter: M/s Sponge Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., Raipur
  • Export Volume: 20 metric tonnes
  • Destination: Papua New Guinea
  • Coordinated by: APEDA under Ministry of Commerce and Industry
  • Supported by: Government of Chhattisgarh and The Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREA-CG)

This shipment reflects India’s growing footprint in nutrition-driven agricultural exports and its emerging role as a reliable global supplier of fortified food solutions.

Regional Impact – Chhattisgarh

  • Positions Chhattisgarh as a key player in rice and fortified food exports.
  • Encourages farmers, millers, and exporters from the state to explore international markets.
  • Builds agro-industrial capacity and visibility in global trade.
