India Launches First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling

India has taken a major leap toward transforming its road infrastructure by launching its first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. This innovative system, which eliminates toll barriers and allows seamless travel, will be first implemented at the Choryasi Fee Plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat.

The initiative is a result of an agreement between Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL)—promoted by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)—and ICICI Bank. The contract was signed at NHAI headquarters in New Delhi on August 30, 2025, in the presence of NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav and senior officials.

Key Features of Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling

What is MLFF?

Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling is a high-tech, barrier-less toll system that uses FASTag and Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) to collect tolls electronically. It employs High-Performance RFID Readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras to automatically detect and charge vehicles without requiring them to stop.

This system is designed to,

  • Eliminate toll booths and stop-and-go traffic
  • Reduce congestion and travel time
  • Enhance fuel efficiency
  • Lower vehicle emissions
  • Improve toll revenue accuracy and transparency

Where Will It Be Implemented?

The pilot MLFF system will begin at Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat, making it the first toll plaza in India to be completely barrier-free. Additionally, another site—Gharaunda Fee Plaza on NH-44 in Haryana—will also adopt the MLFF system as part of early implementation.

NHAI plans to expand MLFF to around 25 National Highway fee plazas during the 2025–26 financial year, and the process of identifying additional sites is already underway.
