India is all set to host the first-ever Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship from March 9 to March 14, 2026. More than 24 countries from the Commonwealth are expected to take part in this historic event, marking a major milestone for the traditional Indian sport of Kho Kho.
Approval from Commonwealth Sports
The Commonwealth Sports has officially approved India to host the 2026 Kho Kho Championship. This recognition highlights the growing global interest in Kho Kho, a sport that has deep roots in Indian culture and heritage.
Global Participation Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship
Over 24 Commonwealth nations from Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas will participate in the championship. The Commonwealth is an association of 56 independent countries with a combined population of 2.7 billion, making this a truly international event.
A Major Event After Kho Kho World Cup
This championship is expected to be the next big event in Kho Kho after the first Kho Kho World Cup held in New Delhi earlier this year. The World Cup saw 23 nations participate, including 20 men’s teams and 19 women’s teams.
For 2026, the championship will feature 16 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams, competing simultaneously, just like the World Cup.
Venue and Future Plans
The Kho Kho Federation of India is in talks with various states to finalize the venue. Ahmedabad, which will host the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, is expected to benefit from this event.
According to Upkar Singh Virk, General Secretary of the federation, this championship could be a stepping stone for Kho Kho’s inclusion in future international competitions, including the Doha Asian Games 2030, Commonwealth Games 2030, and the Brisbane Olympics 2032.
Boost for Indian Traditional Sports
The event is expected to increase global awareness and popularity of Kho Kho. By hosting an international championship, India aims to promote its traditional sports on a global stage and inspire young athletes across the country.
