India to Set Global Standards in Data Quality: Chief Economic Adviser Nageswaran

In a bold and timely assertion of its growing technological and administrative competence, India is set to establish global standards in data quality, according to Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran. Addressing a key meeting organized by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the CEA declared that India is now positioned to set data benchmarks that even developed nations may follow.

This announcement comes as global attention turns towards concerns about statistical accuracy and transparency in Western economies.

India’s Vision: From Data User to Data Leader

Traditionally seen as a data-rich but systems-weak nation, India is now poised to lead the global narrative on credible and timely statistics. Speaking at a sensitisation and review meeting with statistical advisers across ministries and government departments, Nageswaran emphasized,

  • “We are now going to be able to set the benchmark for developed countries to follow.”
  • His remarks reflect a paradigm shift—from India playing catch-up in data infrastructure to becoming a trendsetter in statistical governance.

Global Context: Data Woes in Developed Nations

Nageswaran’s remarks gain relevance amid statistical controversies in leading economies,

  • In the United States, President Donald Trump recently dismissed the labour statistics chief over allegedly inaccurate job numbers.
  • In the United Kingdom, the national statistical authority has called for structural reforms to improve transparency and public trust in data.
  • These developments point to a global crisis in data reliability—a gap India now seeks to fill with robust statistical tools and reforms.

MoSPI’s New Move: Service Production Index

To enhance data robustness and better reflect the structure of the Indian economy, MoSPI is set to introduce a Service Production Index. This new measure will,

  • Function similarly to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), which currently tracks industrial activity.
  • Focus on capturing service sector dynamics, which account for a major share of India’s GDP.
  • Provide timely and sector-wise insights for policymaking and business planning.
  • This initiative represents a significant upgrade in India’s ability to monitor real-time economic performance, particularly in service-driven growth models.

Tech-Driven Statistical Reform

Adil Zainulbhai, former chairman of the Capacity Building Commission, echoed the CEA’s optimism, urging the use of technology to modernize data systems across ministries. He emphasized,

“We have an opportunity to upgrade enough for our data systems to become the gold standard for the world.”

His comments align with India’s digital governance momentum, including the success of,

  • Digital India
  • Aadhaar-enabled services
  • Real-time dashboards for public service delivery
