Indian Railways Launches First LNG–Diesel Dual-Fuel DEMU Train in Ahmedabad

Indian Railways has achieved an important milestone by launching the country’s first LNG–Diesel dual-fuel DEMU train. The train has been operationalised at **Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, marking a big move towards sustainable and environment-friendly rail operations.

This initiative supports Indian Railways’ goal of reducing pollution, cutting fuel costs, and adopting cleaner energy solutions.

What Is an LNG–Diesel Dual-Fuel DEMU Train?

A DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train is commonly used for short-distance passenger services. In this new model, the DEMU train has been upgraded to run on a dual-fuel system, using both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and diesel.

The train has 1,400 horsepower (HP) driving power cars that have been converted to use LNG along with diesel. LNG replaces around 40% of conventional diesel, making the train more fuel-efficient and cleaner.

Successful Field Trials Over 2,000 km

Before starting regular passenger service, the dual-fuel DEMU train successfully completed over 2,000 kilometres of field trials. These trials tested the train’s performance, safety, fuel efficiency, and operational reliability.

The trials showed that the train could run smoothly without technical or operational issues. After successful testing, the train was approved for regular passenger operations, making it the first of its kind in India.

Environmental Benefits of the Dual-Fuel System

One of the biggest advantages of the LNG–diesel system is its positive impact on the environment.

Key Environmental Benefits

  • Significant reduction in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions

  • Lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions

  • Improved air quality along railway routes

  • Reduced noise and smoke pollution

These benefits help make railway travel cleaner, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.

Cost and Efficiency Advantages

Apart from environmental gains, the dual-fuel DEMU train also offers cost and efficiency benefits.

Economic Benefits

  • Reduced diesel consumption

  • Lower fuel costs for Indian Railways

  • Better energy efficiency

  • No major operational changes required

The train is now running regularly in passenger service without any operational problems, proving that clean energy solutions can work at scale.

A Step Towards Sustainable Rail Transport

This launch reflects Indian Railways’ long-term commitment to green transportation and net-zero goals. By adopting LNG-based technology, Indian Railways is setting an example for cleaner and smarter public transport in India.

If expanded further, this technology can play a major role in reducing the railways’ carbon footprint while improving passenger experience.
