Indian Railways has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Switzerland’s Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to deepen technical collaboration, targeting infrastructure modernization and operational efficiency. Signed via video conferencing, this agreement marks the continuation of a partnership initiated in 2017, focusing on areas critical to railway technology enhancement.
The MoU renewal received backing from India’s Ministry of Railways and Ministry of External Affairs, with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighting the alignment with India’s modernization goals.
Technology and Infrastructure Focus
The renewed MoU emphasizes areas such as:
- Track Maintenance and Management: Comprehensive solutions for improved track quality and operational management.
- Technological Advancements and Equipment: Incorporation of Swiss railway technology, including traction rolling stock, electric multiple units, tilting trains, and railway electrification systems.
- Station Modernization and Multimodal Solutions: Enhanced passenger experience through station upgrades and integration with other transport systems.
- Tunneling and Freight Solutions: Swiss expertise in tunneling technology and freight optimization to boost capacity and efficiency.
Joint Working Group (JWG) and Collaborative Meetings
A Joint Working Group (JWG) has been in place to facilitate collaboration since 2017, holding periodic meetings—most recently on October 11, 2023—to discuss capital expenditure and infrastructure investment opportunities for Swiss firms. The Indian Railways’ focus on foreign partnerships is expected to boost passenger and freight services, with Swiss firms providing machinery, materials, and consultancy support in tunneling projects.
Commitment to Modernization and Efficiency
This partnership is set to significantly enhance Indian Railways’ efficiency, reliability, and service quality, benefiting both passengers and freight operations. The presence of notable figures, including Mridul Kumar, India’s Ambassador to Switzerland, and Federal Councilor Albert Roesti, underscores the commitment to leveraging international expertise in the ongoing modernization of Indian rail infrastructure.
