India’s Defence Spending Rises to $92.1 Billion, Ranks Fifth Globally: SIPRI

India has been emerged as the fifth-largest military spender in the world in the year 2025. This position reveled as per the report released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The country’s defense expenditure rose by the 8.9% to $92.1 billion which is showcasing the growing security needs and modernization efforts. The key factor behind this increase was the India and Pakistan conflict in the May 2025 which involved the advanced warfare technologies like drones, missiles and the combat aircraft.

India’s Defense Spending Surge in 2025

The military expenditure of India has reached to the $92.1 billion and making India as the 5th largest spender worldwide and overtaking the United Kingdom.

This accounts for nearly the 3.2% of the global military spending.

The increase was largely influenced by the India and Pakistan conflict which started in the May 2025 which have required the higher operational readiness and rapid deployment of the advanced military systems.

The conflict also saw the use of combat aircraft, drones and the missile systems pushing the defense costs upward.

Additionally the India revised the its capital spending significantly as the military aircraft system allocations rising by the 50% and Air Force operational costs increased by 18%.

The top five military spenders in the world in 2025 were,

Together these countries accounted for the nearly 58% of the global military expenditure which accumulated the total around $1,686 billion.

Global Military Spending Trends

Overall the Global military expenditure have reached $2,887 billion in 2025 and will be marking the 11th consecutive year of growth.

Over the past decade (2016-2025) the spending has increased by the 41% as the geopolitical tensions rising and the regional conflicts.

However the growth rate in 2025 was slightly lower compare to the 9.7% increase in the year 2024.

This trend also indicates that nations are increasingly prioritizing the defense in response to global instability.

China’s Rising Military Power

China also remains the second-largest military spender with the expenditure of $336 billion in 2025 and it marking the 31st consecutive year with annual increase.

China’s spending supports the its long-term goal of the military modernization by 2035 which includes the developments such as,

  • Sixth-generation combat aircraft (J-36, J-50)
  • H-20 strategic bomber

Between the year 2016 and 2025 and China’s military spending also grew by the 62% and will highlighting the expanding global military ambitions.

Pakistan’s Defense Spending Growth

Pakistan also have increased the military spending by the 11% to $11.9 billion in 2025 and ranked 31st in the world.

The rise was driven by the,

  • Also the getting payments for ongoing procurement contracts.
  • And the strategic response to the 2025 conflict with India.

United States: Still the Largest Spender

The United States have also remained the world’s top military spender in the world with $954 billion in 2025. It is accounting for the nearly one-third of global expenditure.

However this spending declined by the 7.5% compared to 2024 mainly due to the reduced military aid to Ukraine.
