Indo-US Joint Special Forces Exercise “VAJRA PRAHAR 2023” Commences in Meghalaya

The 14th edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise, known as “VAJRA PRAHAR 2023,” commenced at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, signaling a renewed commitment to enhancing military collaboration and interoperability between the Indian Army and the US Army Special Forces.

Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR Overview:

Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR, initiated in 2010, stands as a testament to the robust partnership between the Indian Army and the US Army Special Forces. The exercise focuses on the exchange of best practices and experiences, with a primary emphasis on joint mission planning and operational tactics. Over the years, it has evolved into a vital platform for Special Forces from both nations to collaborate, fostering stronger defense cooperation.

Participating Contingents:

The US contingent, representing the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) of the US Special Forces, joins forces with Special Forces personnel from the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. This collaborative effort aims to facilitate joint training opportunities, allowing both contingents to share expertise and enhance their capabilities.

Background and Venue:

The inaugural edition of VAJRA PRAHAR took place in 2010, with subsequent editions reinforcing the commitment to mutual learning and interoperability. The ongoing 14th edition, spanning from November 21 to December 11, 2023, is hosted at Umroi Cantonment, Meghalaya.

Drills and Training Objectives:

Over the next three weeks, the participating contingents will engage in a series of specialized operations and exercises designed to address conventional and unconventional scenarios, particularly in challenging mountainous terrain. Key elements of the training include:

  • Combat Free Fall Insertion: Troop insertion from stand-off distances.
  • Waterborne Insertion: Specialized water-based troop insertion methods.
  • Precision Engagement: Target engagement at extended ranges.
  • Combat Air Controlling: Coordination of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft in combat scenarios.
  • Airborne Insertion and Sustenance: Techniques for troop insertion and support.

These drills aim to significantly enhance the capabilities and interoperability of both Special Forces units, ensuring they are well-prepared for a spectrum of challenges.
