Maharashtra Introduces Geo-Tagged Unique ID for All Infra Projects

In a major step towards transparency and efficient monitoring, the Government of Maharashtra has mandated the assignment of a geo-tagged 13-digit alphanumeric unique ID to all infrastructure development projects in the state. This ID will serve as the primary reference once administrative approval is granted. The initiative aims to bring digital uniformity, prevent duplication, and enable real-time tracking of infrastructure projects across departments through the Infra ID portal, with a target to register all projects sanctioned in the last five years by March 2026.

Why in News?

The Maharashtra government has activated the Infra ID portal on June 9, 2025. Aimed at ensuring project-level transparency, the initiative will first cover Wardha district in Vidarbha.The scheme will be expanded to all departments and districts starting October 1, 2025. Registration of all infra projects since 2020 is expected to be completed by March 2026.

Objective of the Unique Infra ID Initiative

• To provide a digital identity to every infrastructure project in Maharashtra.

• To centralize project data for better governance and transparency.

How the Unique ID Works

The 13-digit alphanumeric ID includes,

• 1 letter state code (e.g., M for Maharashtra)
• 2-digit year code (e.g., 25 for 2025)
• 4-letter scheme/program code
• 3-letter district code
• 2-letter asset type abbreviation
• 3-digit serial number
• Example: M25RURWRDRODW001
• This ID becomes mandatory after project approval.

• Public Works Department
• Rural Development
• Urban Development
• Water Conservation
• Water Supply & Sanitation
• Irrigation Department
• Initial implementation begins in Wardha district, Vidarbha.

Use of Technology

• Projects will be geo-tagged using MRSAC (Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre).
• The Infra ID Portal allows public and inter-agency access to project data.
• The platform enhances project lifecycle management, from approval to completion.

Implementation Timeline

• June 2025: Infra ID Portal launched.
• October 2025: Rollout across all districts/departments begins.
• March 2026: Completion deadline for registering projects from past 5 years.

Governance Mechanism

• The District Collector’s Committee will decide on the cancellation or modification of a unique ID.
• Accountability measures are embedded to ensure project authenticity.
