Maharashtra to Celebrate MS Swaminathan’s Birth Anniversary as Sustainable Agriculture Day

The Maharashtra government has announced that August 7, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, will be observed as Sustainable Agriculture Day. This decision recognizes the legendary scientist’s pioneering contribution to Indian agriculture, particularly his role in boosting the production of wheat and rice, which led to India’s Green Revolution.

Establishment of Bio-Happiness Research Centres

In a Government Resolution (GR) issued on Tuesday, the state government directed all agriculture universities in Maharashtra to establish Dr. MS Swaminathan Bio-Happiness Centre-Research Centres.

These centres will focus on crucial areas such as,

  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Climate adaptation technology
  • Food security

The aim is to promote innovative agricultural research that ensures both farmers’ welfare and environmental sustainability.

Commemorative Events Across the State

The government has instructed the Agriculture Commissioner to issue detailed guidelines for celebrating the day. The initiatives will include,

  • Hosting statewide events and seminars on sustainable farming.
  • Organizing awareness campaigns to encourage eco-friendly farming practices.
  • Presenting awards in the name of Dr. MS Swaminathan to individuals and institutions who have made remarkable contributions to agriculture.

  • Dr. Swaminathan, widely known as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, played a decisive role in ending food scarcity in India.
