Meghalaya has partnered with the Starlink to improve connectivity across the state. It was announced on the April 1, 2026 and this agreement is aims to bring the high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas of the state. Honorable Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized that this partnership could transform the sectors like education, healthcare and rural livelihoods.
Meghalaya-Starlink Agreement
The Government of Meghalaya has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink India. And this is marking the significant step to bridging the digital divide in the Northeast state.
This partnership is focuses on to the delivering the satellite-based internet services and also to reach remote and difficult terrains. It also plays the role to strengthen the digital infra in the hilly state.
As compare to the traditional broadband Starlink uses the low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. It will be enabling faster and the more reliable connectivity even in those geographically challenging regions like Meghalaya.
Need For Satellite Internet For Meghalaya
As the state make good progress in the infrastructure but many parts of the state still face the limited internet access due to,
- Hilly terrain and presence of the dense forests
- Lack of fiber optic networks in state
- High remote rural settlements
The Chief Minister highlighted importance of this. He stated that while governance processes will be improved significantly and it will reducing timelines from 30 days to just 3 days.

It will play the role to transforming the education area where the remote schools will gain access to the online learning platform along with the digital classrooms.
