Meta has introduced its first AI model from its new Superintelligence Labs, called Muse Spark, but soon after its launch, the model has received mixed reactions from experts and users.
What is Muse Spark?
Muse Spark is a new artificial intelligence model developed by Meta. It is the first model in the company’s Muse series and is designed to power the Meta AI assistant.
This AI can help users in daily tasks. For example, it can:
- Estimate calories in food using a photo
- Show how an object (like a mug) will look on a shelf
- Answer questions related to science, math and health
The model is currently available on the Meta AI app and website.
Where will be Used?
Right now, Muse Spark is used in the Meta AI chatbot. In the coming weeks, Meta plans to expand its use across its platform, including:
- Fcebook
- Meta smart glasses
The chatbot will remain free for now, but the company may introduce a paid subscription in the future.
Why are Some Experts Criticizing It?
Soon after the launch, some users and experts raised concerns about the model’s performance.
AI expert François Chollet criticized Muse Spark, calling it a “disappointment.” He said the model seems too focused on scoring well in public tests (benchmarks) instead of being truly useful in real-life situations.
According to him, understanding how to properly test AI models is very important and new labs must improve in this area to succeed.
Meta’s Response to the Criticism
Meta’s AI head Alexandr Wang responded to the criticism in a calm and open way.
He said the company welcomes feedback and is aware that the model does not perform well in some tests like ARC AGI 2. Meta has already shared these results publicly.
Wang also added that the company has received positive feedback in areas like:
- Visual coding
- Writing style
- Reasoning ability
He said these are strengths the company will continue to improve.
Features and Design of the Model
Meta described Muse Spark as a small and fast model. Even though it is not very large, it is still capable of solving complex questions.
However, the company did not reveal the exact size of the model, which is usually an important detail for comparing AI systems.
What’s Next for Meta AI?
Meta has said that Muse Spark is just the beginning. The company is already working on the next version of the model, which is expected to be more powerful and improved.
