National Geographic Names Jaipur to Its Best of the World 2027 List

National Geographic released its annual “Best of the World 2027” list on 20 October 2026, featuring 25 destinations across six continents. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, has been included in the list as the historic city approaches the 300th anniversary of its foundation in 2027.

The selection highlights Jaipur’s architectural heritage, cultural traditions, festivals and literary events, strengthening its reputation as a major destination for heritage and cultural tourism.

Why Was Jaipur Selected?

National Geographic’s “Best of the World” list recognises destinations for their cultural significance, new attractions, revivals and milestone celebrations. Jaipur’s inclusion is linked to its upcoming 300th anniversary and its vibrant cultural calendar, including the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The Jaipur Literature Festival is scheduled to hold its 20th edition from 14 to 18 January 2027. The festival brings together authors, publishers and readers for literary discussions and cultural events.

Jaipur’s Urban and Architectural Heritage

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, and designed by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. The city was planned with a grid layout, broad streets and organised market areas.

The historic walled city of Jaipur was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. Its architectural heritage reflects Rajput and Mughal influences, featuring palaces, courtyards and distinctive pink-hued buildings.

Major Landmarks in Jaipur
