Historical Background- National Voters’ Day

Initiated in 2011, National Voters’ Day was established by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address a growing concern. The then-Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ambika Soni, highlighted the increasing apathy among new voters, particularly those who had recently turned 18, towards enrolling in electoral rolls. In response, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the government approved a proposal from the law ministry to kickstart a campaign aimed at resolving this issue.
