The newest district of Karnataka is Vijayanagara, formed in 2021. It was carved out of the Ballari (Bellary) district and became Karnataka’s 31st district. The district headquarters is located in Hosapete. Vijayanagara is famous for its historical city of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Location of Vijayanagara
Vijayanagara is located in the Indian state of Karnataka, along the Tungabhadra River. The district was carved out of Ballari and its headquarters is at Hosapete. The area includes the historic city of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by hills and rocky landscapes, Vijayanagara is rich in natural beauty and ancient monuments. It is well connected by road and rail and is a popular tourist destination known for its temples and historic ruins.
History of Vijayanagara
Vijayanagara was founded in the 14th century by two brother, Harihara I and Bukha, after the fall of South Indian kingdoms due to attacks from the Delhi Sultanate. It became the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, a powerful Hindu kingdom. The city grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest and richest cities in the world. In 1565, after the Battle of Talikota, the city was destroyed by invading sultanates and left in ruins, which still stand today in Hampi.
