NSE Launches Electronic Gold Receipts Backed by SEBI-Regulated Vaults

The initiative to trade in the Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs), which are backed by SEBI-monitored vault managers, has been taken by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), thereby modernizing the bullion market of India. The new type of traded instrument makes it possible for the investors to execute the transactions by electronically buying, selling, and redeeming gold while keeping the actual physical gold in the vaults of the regulated vault managers.

About Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs)

Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs) are securities traded in stock exchanges which secure ownership of gold stored in the vault under the supervision of SEBI.

All the EGRs correspond to a certain quantity of gold fulfilling given purity and quality requirements. Investors no longer have to buy and store physical gold in order to benefit from it; instead, they possess gold in electronic form (i.e., dematerialized form) and trade it on the stock exchanges.

Physical gold is safely kept by vault managers under SEBI regulations until the investor decides to cash it in.

Main Characteristics of Electronic Gold Receipts

The electronic gold receipt, or EGR, combines the benefits of investing in gold with the ease of electronic trading.

Features

  • Instrument: EGR
  • Underlying Asset: Physical Gold
  • Storage Regulated by: SEBI
  • Holding Format: Demat account
  • Trading Platform: NSE
  • Redemption: Physical gold as per the rules

Such regulated structure increases the transparency and guarantees that all receipts are backed by actual physical gold.

How Does the EGR Ecosystem Work?

The EGR ecosystem connects all constituents, such as investors, depositories, vault managers, and stock exchanges, under a regulated system.

Step-by-Step Process

  • Physical gold is deposited with the vault manager registered with SEBI.
  • The vault manager checks the gold for quantity and purity.
  • An Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR) gets issued in demat form.
  • Investors can buy and sell EGR on the National Stock Exchange.
  • The eligible investors can redeem EGR for physical gold as per the defined redemption process.

Benefits of Electronic Gold Receipts Provide to Investors

Electronic Gold Receipts have come up with various benefits compared to the usual physical form of gold investments.

1. Safe Storage

Physical gold is kept safe in the vaults regulated by SEBI and therefore there is no worry of loss, theft, or unsafe storage.

2. Ownership in Demat form

With Electronic Gold Receipts, investors can hold gold in their demat account which provides ease in their transactions.

3. Transparent Price Discovery

Electronic Gold Receipts get traded on the stock exchange so the pricing mechanism is transparent instead of relying on informal markets.

4. Standardization of Quality

Each Electronic Gold Receipt is backed by gold of standard purity specifications thus increasing investor confidence.

5. Enhanced Liquidity

Trading of EGRs on exchange makes it easier for the investors to buy/sell gold compared to physical gold transactions.

The Role of Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs) in Gold market in India

India ranks high among gold consumer countries, sill it has mostly undergone trading through nonsystematic methods.

Electronic Gold Receipts aim to help this country’s attempts at building a structured and organized market for gold.

  • The EGR initiative is expected to achieve:
  • Maturity of gold price formation.
  • Transparency of gold market.
  • Unification of the market.
  • Increasing involvement of institutional investors.
  • Lessening of informal market dependence.
  • Enhancing confidence of investors in organized trading.
