In 2021, the Tata Group bought Air India from the Government of India for Rs.180 billion (about US$2.44 billion). Tata Group also took over Rs.153 billion (about US$2.07 billion) of Air India’s debt. The rest of Air India’s debt was transferred elsewhere.

Merges and Changes After Takeover

  • After buying Air India, Tata Group made plans to merge AirAsia India and Vistara with Air India.
  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved this merger in June 2022.
  • After this merger, in 2024, Singapore Airlines got a 25.1% share in Air India Limited.
