PM Modi Addresses 79th U.N. General Assembly Session in New York

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant address at the 79th U.N. General Assembly session, themed “Summit of the Future,” held in New York on September 22, 2024. Emphasizing the necessity for reforms in global institutions, Modi stated that such changes are crucial for ensuring global peace and development. The summit commenced prior to the high-level meeting of world leaders, initiated by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who urged global leaders to recommit to multilateralism to address the pressing challenges facing humanity.

Collective Strength Over Warfare

In his address, Modi articulated that humanity’s success is rooted in collective strength rather than military conflict. He called for a reform of global governance institutions, highlighting the dangers posed by terrorism and emerging technological threats. Modi extended India’s readiness to share its development experience and digital public infrastructure, asserting that global governance should prioritize peace and equitable technology use.

India’s Role in Global Governance

Modi underscored India’s participation in the largest democratic elections in history and positioned himself as a representative voice for one-sixth of humanity. Although India refrained from proposing a peace plan regarding ongoing global conflicts, it is recognized as a potential mediator due to its connections with both Russia and Ukraine. In a notable meeting, Modi also conferred with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirming India’s support for peace in the region.

Commitment to Global Development and Security

The U.N. adopted the “Pact for the Future,” a progressive document that includes a Global Digital Compact and emphasizes reform in the U.N. Security Council, particularly addressing Africa’s underrepresentation. Modi echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for global governance structures that reflect contemporary realities. He noted that reforms are essential for the relevance of global institutions, as demonstrated by the G20 summit’s decision to grant the African Union permanent membership.

Addressing Emerging Threats

Modi warned against threats to global peace and security arising from terrorism and new technological domains such as cyberspace and outer space. He called for coordinated global action in these areas and highlighted the need for robust international frameworks to govern outer space to prevent an arms race and misuse of technology.

India’s Development Narrative

Focusing on India’s success in lifting 250 million people out of poverty, Modi advocated for a “human-centric approach” to sustainable development that prioritizes human welfare and security. He emphasized the importance of balanced digital governance that respects national sovereignty. Modi pledged that India is prepared to share its digital public infrastructure with the global community to foster connectivity and inclusivity.

 A Universalist Message

Concluding his address, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to the principles of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” as part of its broader vision for global prosperity. He affirmed that India will continue to advocate for the welfare of humanity through its actions and policies, positioning itself as a proactive player in the global landscape.
