Reliance Group Collaborates with Bhutan on Renewable Energy

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group is making significant strides into Bhutan’s renewable energy sector by planning the development of 1,270 megawatts of solar and hydroelectric power projects. In a strategic partnership with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI), the commercial arm of the Bhutanese government.

Aim

The initiative aims to strengthen Bhutan’s renewable energy infrastructure in line with the country’s (Bhutan) net-zero goals.

Projects Announcements

  1. 500 MW solar power plant in Gelephu Mindfulness City.
  • Reliance Group will collaborate with Druk Holding to implement green energy projects.
  • The solar project, to be completed in two phases of 250 MW.
  • Each project will be the largest of its kind in Bhutan. 
  • Land for the project has been identified, and technical teams from both sides, along with external consultants, are currently conducting site assessments and technical studies.
  1. Development of the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-1 hydroelectric project.
  • Which will follow Bhutan’s concession model for run-of-the-river hydro plants.
  • This run-of-the-river project will further increase Bhutan’s total installed power generation capacity, which currently stands at 2,452 MW. 
  • The hydropower initiative is a significant step in Bhutan’s renewable energy journey and represents a rare joint venture between a Bhutanese government-owned entity and a private Indian company.

  • Also help set up smart distribution and metering systems throughout Bhutan to provide sustainable energy solutions that meet the country’s needs.
