In a performance that symbolized redemption and resilience, India’s top men’s doubles badminton pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, defeated their long-time rivals Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia to enter the semifinals of the BWF World Championships 2025. This hard-fought victory came almost exactly a year after the Indian duo’s heartbreaking Olympic loss to the same opponents in Paris, making the win not just significant, but deeply personal.
The Match: Revenge on the Same Court
In a powerful rematch held at the same arena in Paris, where they suffered a medal-missing defeat during the 2024 Olympics, the Indian world No. 3 duo delivered a commanding 21-12, 21-19 victory in just 43 minutes.
It was the same court, same arena. Olympics and now World Championships. And I think we finally got some redemption.”
A Continuing Legacy for Indian Badminton
This is Satwik and Chirag’s second World Championships medal, following their bronze in 2022. Their achievement continues India’s podium streak in the men’s and women’s doubles categories, a trend that began with Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa’s bronze in 2011.
Their entry into the semifinals assures India of at least a bronze medal, as the BWF World Championships awards joint bronze to both semifinal losers.
