South Eastern Coalfield Limited’s Gevra Mine Set to Become The Largest Coal Mine in Asia

South Eastern Coalfield Limited’s (SECL) Gevra mine, located in Chhattisgarh, is on the verge of becoming the largest coal mine in Asia. The mine recently received environmental clearance to enhance its production capacity to 70 million tons per annum, up from the existing 52.5 million tons. This expansion marks a pivotal moment not only for SECL but also for the nation’s energy sector, as India moves to bolster its coal production capabilities.

Accelerated Environmental Clearance

The Ministry of Coal, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), played a crucial role in fast-tracking the environmental clearance process. This expedited approval underscores the strategic importance of the Gevra mine as one of the mega projects under SECL’s umbrella, aiming to meet the escalating energy demands of the country.

Shri Prem Sagar Misha, CMD of SECL, hailed the clearance as a “historic milestone” and emphasized the vision of making Gevra not just the largest mine in Asia but in the world, equipped with state-of-the-art mining operations. This ambition reflects India’s broader objective to enhance its coal mining efficiency and productivity, aligning with global best practices.

Gratitude and Vision

The SECL management extended their gratitude towards the Ministry of Coal for their unwavering support in securing the environmental clearance (EC) for the Gevra mine. This achievement is celebrated as a “historic day” for SECL and Chhattisgarh, positioning the state as the future site of Asia’s largest coal mine. Acknowledgment was also given to the MoEFCC for their swift action in granting the EC, alongside the contributions from various agencies at both the Centre and State levels, as well as the Government of Chhattisgarh.

About Gevra Mine

Gevra, one of SECL’s flagship projects, has been a cornerstone in India’s coal mining industry for over four decades, contributing significantly to the nation’s energy security. With an impressive annual production of 52.5 million tons in the fiscal year 2022-23, Gevra has already established itself as the country’s largest coal mine. The mine spans approximately 10 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers in breadth.

In its operations, Gevra employs eco-friendly, blast-free mining technologies such as Surface Miner and Ripper Mining. Additionally, it utilizes some of the highest capacity Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM), including 42 cubic meter shovels and 240-ton dumpers for overburden removal. The mine is also equipped with first-mile connectivity features, including a conveyor belt, silos, and a Rapid Loading System, facilitating swift and environmentally friendly coal evacuation.
