Sudha Murty, the First Woman to get Global Indian Award

Sudha Murty, Honoree of Global Indian Award

Renowned author, philanthropist and the wife of Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, Sudha Murthy, was honored with the prestigious Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation (CIF) at a grand Indo-Canadian gala in Toronto. The award, which carries a value of $50,000, is presented annually to an outstanding Indian personality who has left an indelible mark in their respective field.

Sudha Murty’s Contributions

Sudha Murty’s exceptional contributions to literature, philanthropy and her dedication to giving back to society made her a fitting recipient for this esteemed award. She has spent her entire career paving the way for future generations, inspiring them to excel in their chosen paths.

Acknowledgement of Remarkable Achievements

Chairman of the Canada India Foundation, Satish Thakkar, expressed his delight at presenting the award to Sudha Murty and acknowledged her enduring commitment to philanthropy and social welfare. He said, “We are so pleased to present the Global Indian Award to Sudha Murthy. She has spent her entire career paving the way for future generations to find success in whatever field they choose and is passionate about giving back to society.”

Acceptance of Global Indian Award

Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, presented the award to Sudha Murty during the gala. In her acceptance speech, she expressed her deep appreciation, stating, “It is my honor to receive this award from your country.” She also thanked the Canada India Foundation for choosing her, comparing the organization to the character of Lord Krishna in the Mahabharata. She noted that like Krishna, who had two mothers- Devki and Yashoda- the CIF, born in India but settled in Canada, is connected to both nations.

A Touch of Honoring

Adding a touch of humor to the evening, Sudha Murty shared, “There is a funny thing about this award because Narayana Murty also got in 2014 and I got it in 2023. So we are the first couple to get this award.” This statement drew laughter from the audience, highlighting the unique achievement of both husband and wife receiving the same prestigious recognition.

Donation of the Awarded Money

In a touching and generous gesture, Sudha Murthy donated $50,000 award money to The Field Institute at the University of Toronto. The institute is renowned internationally for its efforts in strengthening collaborations, innovation and learning in mathematics and various other disciplines.
