Every year, 4th July is observed as the Punyatithi (death anniversary) of Swami Vivekananda, a great Indian saint philosopher and spiritual teacher. He is known as the Father of Modern Indian Nationalism and played a big role in taking Hinduism and Indian values to the world. His teachings continue to guide the youth and society even today.
About Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta on 12th January 1863 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He became a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, who changed his life and gave him deep spiritual direction. In 1893, on the request on Maharaja Ajit Singh of Khetri, he took the name Vivekananda. He passed away on 4th July 1902 at Belur Math, the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission, in West Bengal.
His Message to the World
Swami Vivekananda’s main message was about unity, peace, service and human values. He believed in the idea that ”every living being is divine,” and serving people is like serving God. He spread the teachings of the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and also took inspiration from Buddha and Jesus Christ.
Chicago Speech of Swami Vivekananda
In 1893, Swami Vivekananda gave a powerful speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, USA. His famous words ”Sisters and Brothers of America” touched millions and introduced the world to the philosophy of Vedanta and Yoga. This speech made him a respected spiritual leader worldwide.
Contribution to Education and Society
Swami Vivekananda strong believed in education for nation-building. he wanted every child to receive a character-building education that makes them confident, kind and self-reliant. He also taught that spirituality and service must of together.
Four Paths to Liberation
He gave four ways to reach moksha (freedom from worldly pain):
- Raja Yoga – path of meditation
- Karma Yoga – path of selfless action
- Jnana Yoga – path of knowledge
- Bhakti Yoga – path of devotion
Ramakrishna Mission
In 1897, Swami Vivekananda started the Ramakrishna Mission to carry forward the teachings of his guru Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The mission works in the fields of education, health, disaster relief and spiritual guidance.
Its motto is:
”Atmano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha”
(for one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world”)
Key goals of the mission:
- To form a group of monks focused on spiritual life and service
- To help people without any discrimination of caste, religion or color
Death of Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda passed away on 4th July 1902 at Belur Math while meditating. Earlier that day, he taught scriptures and discussed plans for a Vedic College. It is believed that he attained mahasamadhi and a rupture in the brain was the possible cause of death. He was cremated near the Ganga.
