The Government of Nagaland has officially named Switzerland and Ireland as country partners for the upcoming Hornbill Festival 2025, reinforcing the festival’s growing international stature. This announcement follows high-level meetings in New Delhi between Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the respective ambassadors of both countries. With this, the Hornbill Festival continues to evolve from a state-level celebration of Naga heritage into a globally recognized cultural convergence.
Details of the Partnership
The confirmation of Switzerland’s participation came after a meeting between Chief Minister Rio and Swiss Ambassador Maya Tissafi, where both sides discussed avenues for cultural collaboration. Ambassador Tissafi expressed optimism that this partnership would pave the way for deeper ties across tourism, culture, and other sectors.
In a similar engagement, CM Rio met Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly, who confirmed Ireland’s involvement as a country partner. Ireland is expected to bring a diverse cultural delegation to the festival, including folk music, literary exchanges, public art, dialogue sessions, and theatre performances, enriching the festival’s multi-ethnic platform.
Switzerland and Ireland now join the United Kingdom, which had previously been announced as a partner for Hornbill 2025, signaling a broader global interest in participating in India’s northeastern cultural showcase.
About Hornbill Festival
The Hornbill Festival, often referred to as the “Festival of Festivals,” is held annually from 1st to 10th December at the Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, Nagaland. The event showcases the rich cultural diversity of the state’s 17 major tribes through traditional dance, music, sports, crafts, and cuisine. It is also a vital tourism event, attracting thousands of visitors from India and abroad each year.
The festival derives its name from the Great Indian Hornbill, a revered bird in Naga folklore, symbolizing the cultural spirit and identity of the state.

The inclusion of international country partners like Switzerland and Ireland represents a major step in elevating the festival’s global appeal. These partnerships serve multiple purposes,
