The objective was to celebrate the role of the public service in development and highlight the contributions of public institutions worldwide.

To further strengthen the recognition of the excellence in public administration, the United Nations has also established the United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program in the year 2003.

The awards program was later updated to align with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development.

The 2026 United Nations Public Service Forum is set to be held in Tbilisi, Georgia, from June 23 to June 25, 2026.
