Uttar Pradesh Renames Bhadohi as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi

Government of Uttar Pradesh has renamed the Bhadohi district to Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. This was stated by the Honorable Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at an event held in the district on October 4th 2026, which marks the inauguration of the developmental projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore. The renaming of the district is done to honor Saint Ravidas of the medieval Bhakti era while still keeping ‘Bhadohi’ as part of the district’s identity.

Renaming of Bhadohi District to Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi

This particular renaming will bring back the name of the district as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi from just Bhadohi.

The renaming becomes important because the district has witnessed several name changes from the time it was formed in 1994. The official records of the district administration reveal that the district of Bhadohi was formed on 30 June 1994 as the 65th district of the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Bhadohi District History

Bhadohi district came into existence after being separated from Varanasi district on 30 June 1994, becoming the 65th district of Uttar Pradesh state. The official history of the district mentions that the region had associations with Bhar Raj in the past, with Bhadohi being the capital of the same.

Afterward, the district saw alterations in its official designation. While Sant Ravidas Nagar was used as the name of the district in the late 1990s, some subsequent modifications brought Bhadohi back into circulation as the name for the district.

The latest change has once again placed Sant Ravidas Nagar as the focal point in the nomenclature of the district.

Why Is Sant Ravidas Linked with Bhadohi?

Sant Ravidas, also known as Ravidas or Raidas, was a medieval saint who had associations with the Bhakti movement.

He gained fame for his devotional verses that talked about spiritual equality and harmony in society.

Carpet Industry of Bhadohi

Bhadohi enjoys world recognition owing to carpet manufacturing and handwoven carpets. The ODOP portal of the Government of Uttar Pradesh highlights that carpets are the specialty product of Bhadohi district and that Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi) is among the main Indian locations of handwoven carpet manufacturing.

The carpet industry enjoys the expertise of several generations of skilled craftsmen and weaving communities. The carpets of Bhadohi also enjoy GI status as a result of their unique regional craftsmanship.

Development Projects Launched in Bhadohi

The news of renaming of the district was made during the launching of an important development program in the district.

As per information from the Information and Public Relations Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones for 112 development projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore in Bhadohi on October 4, 2026.

It was also the occasion when the Golden Jubilee edition of the India Carpet Expo was launched.
