India has achieved a fresh milestone in agricultural trade with the first-ever export of GI-tagged limes to the United Kingdom. This landmark shipment includes Indi Lime from Karnataka and Puliyankudi Lime from Tamil Nadu, both known for their distinctive flavour and aroma. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Department of Commerce
Indi Lime: A Citrus Pride of Karnataka
Indi Lime, cultivated predominantly in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka, is celebrated for its superior quality, rich aroma, high juice yield, and balanced acidity. This lime stands out due to,
- Its distinctive zesty flavour, ideal for both culinary and medicinal use.
- Strong roots in traditional farming practices, reflecting Karnataka’s deep agricultural heritage.
- High market demand because of its juice content and consistent size, enhancing both domestic and export appeal.
Beyond its culinary uses, Indi Lime holds value in traditional medicine and is often used in ritualistic and cultural practices, making it a versatile and culturally significant crop.
Puliyankudi Lime: The Citrus Star of Tamil Nadu
Located in Tenkasi district, Puliyankudi is often dubbed the “Lemon City of Tamil Nadu” for its vast lime cultivation. The Puliyankudi Lime, particularly the Kadayam variety, stands out for,
- A thin peel and strong acidic taste.
- High juice yield (around 55%) and ascorbic acid content (34.3 mg/100g).
- Richness in Vitamin C and antioxidants, supporting immunity and digestion.
These characteristics make the lime not only a nutritional powerhouse but also a valued ingredient in Indian cuisine and herbal health remedies. It received its official GI tag in April 2025, recognising its unique regional qualities and health benefits.
Boosting Agri-Trade Through GI Recognition
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag plays a crucial role in distinguishing India’s native agricultural products in global markets. It ensures,
- Authenticity and connection to a specific region.
- Premium pricing for farmers through value-based trade.
- Increased market visibility for lesser-known but high-quality produce.
This lime export marks a continuation of India’s successful efforts to globalise its GI-tagged products. Earlier in 2025, APEDA also facilitated the shipment of 3 metric tonnes of Swadeshi Indi Lime to the UAE, demonstrating growing international demand.
