The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched MeDevIS (Medical Devices Information System), an online platform designed to be the first global open access clearing house for information on medical devices. It aims to support governments, regulators, and users in making informed decisions about the selection, procurement, and use of medical devices for diagnostics, testing, and treatment of various health conditions.
Comprehensive Database of Medical Devices
MeDevIS includes information on 2301 types of medical devices addressing a wide range of health issues such as reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, noncommunicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and infectious diseases like COVID-19. This extensive database helps healthcare practitioners and patients navigate the growing and complex array of medical technologies.
Simplified Device Naming and Global Standards
The platform references two international naming systems: the European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN) and the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN). These systems provide standardized coding and definitions, facilitating registration for regulatory approval, procurement, supply management, and pricing across different countries.
User-Friendly and Resourceful
MeDevIS allows users to search for required devices by type, level of healthcare system, scope, and infrastructure needs, among other categories. It replaces the traditional, cumbersome paper-based literature search, streamlining the process and ensuring users have access to reliable data from a single source.
Support for Policy Makers and Health Coverage
According to Dr. Deus Mubangizi, WHO Director for Health Products Policy and Standards, MeDevIS can aid national policy-makers in developing or updating national lists for the procurement of health technologies and devices. It also supports health insurance and reimbursement policies, contributing to universal health coverage progress.
Continuous Improvement and Expansion
WHO will continually enhance the MeDevIS platform, engaging with multiple stakeholders and partners, and expanding it to include additional technologies and devices used in various health areas, including pandemic and emergency settings.
Operational Timeline
The MeDevIS platform became operational in March 2024 for consultation with WHO Member States, marking a significant step forward in global health technology access and management.
